| Abstract | The subtropical Jet over South America is investigated through the magnitude wind anomalies of four average areas from 20ºS to 60º S and from 80º W to 40ºW. Composites of positive and of negative anomalies show the main characteristics of the patterns. A dipole pattern can be recognized presenting maximum positive and negative centers in different latitudes. Positive composites have NW winds entering the continent for all 4 areas, as well as anticyclonic circulation over the considered area Over areas II (40ºS-50ºS) and III (30ºS-40ºS) there is confluence for the positive composite and difluence for the negative composite. The frequency of occurrence of anomalies greater than zero is higher for area IV (2008-3008) than for the others areas. It is higher for area I (50ºS-60ºS) and II, considering anomalies greater than 10 m/s, although area IV shows the maximum value for the composite analyses. This maximum occurs in a region where convective activity develops frequently, as seen in satellite images. |
